This date was chosen in honor of Frederick Banting&rsquo;s birth, the man who discovered insulin in 1922. 100 years after his birth, Diabetes International Federation and the World Health Organization instituted a day dedicated to diabetes awareness. Later, December 20th 2006, the United Nations decided November 14 to be the official world diabetes day. This special day exists throughout many countries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\n\tDiabetes Definition<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span><span style=\"font-weight: normal; text-align: justify;\">Diabete Qu&eacute;bec&nbsp;<\/span>defines diabetes as being: &laquo;a chronic, incurable disease that occurs when the body doesn&rsquo;t produce any or enough insulin, leading to an excess of sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone, produced by the pancreas, which helps the cells of the body use the glucose (sugar) in food. Cells need this energy in order to function properly.&raquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal; text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span>Insulin is a hormone, secreted by the pancreas that lowers the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood by letting the cells utilize the glucose for energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\n\tDiabetes Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span>If any or several of these symptoms occur, consult your physician.
