To mark the 60th anniversary of the Montreal Metro, Les R\u00e9sidences Soleil \u2013 Famille Savoie had the pleasure of collaborating with la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de transport de Montr\u00e9al (STM)<\/strong><\/font><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> on a video featuring the memories of seniors who have witnessed the Metro evolve over the decades.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

An STM team visited Les R\u00e9sidences Soleil Manoir Plaza, in downtown Montreal<\/strong>, to hear our residents\u2019 anecdotes, memories and perspectives on how the Metro has changed over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

60 Years of History Told by Our Residents<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For some, those memories go all the way back to the Metro\u2019s earliest days. In 1966, one of our residents was 19 years old, while another remembers being 30 when she first experienced the Metro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI went to the World\u2019s Fair very, very, very often,\u201d one resident recalls, thinking back to Expo 67 and the many trips he made by Metro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, the speed of the new system was particularly impressive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow could it take so little time for a trip that would normally have taken us half an hour by bus?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montreal\u2019s Metro also stood out because of its unique design. Comparing Montreal\u2019s system with New York\u2019s, one resident explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe subway is incredibly noisy. But ours runs on rubber tires.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, the Metro has also become a true link to Montreal\u2019s culture and neighbourhoods. The artwork found throughout the stations, trips to Place des Arts, the CHUM, Jean-Drapeau and outings with friends are all part of the memories shared in the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can get almost anywhere in the city by Metro,\u201d one resident sums up. \u201cYou can cross the whole city underground. That\u2019s almost priceless.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Direct Metro Access That Is Part of Everyday Life

Even today, the Metro continues to play an important role in our residents\u2019 lives. One resident says he takes it \u201ctwo or three times a day,\u201d including to run errands for people who are unable to get around themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Manoir Plaza, this proximity takes on a whole new meaning: Manoir Plaza is the only senior residence in North America to offer direct access to the Montreal Metro.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This private and secure access, reserved exclusively for residents and employees<\/strong>, provides direct entry to the Metro system without having to step outside the residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As one of our residents explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere, in the building, we have direct access to the Metro. In winter, we don\u2019t have to go outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This unique feature also makes it easier to reach several downtown destinations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy Metro, if I\u2019m going to Place des Arts, I don\u2019t need to go outside. If I\u2019m going to the CHUM, I don\u2019t need to go outside. It\u2019s extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for those who enjoy shopping, the Metro is quite literally just steps away:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are just as many stores downstairs as there are upstairs. I\u2019m a shopping girl, you know. I love shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A Collaboration That Shines a Spotlight on Our Residents\u2019 Memories
<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Through their stories, our three residents take us on a journey through 60 years of Montreal Metro history<\/strong>, from its inauguration to the trips that remain part of their everyday lives today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their participation in this video produced by the STM is a wonderful opportunity to highlight their experiences, their stories and their connection to the Montreal community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And to celebrate the anniversary in their own way, one final, simple wish was shared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wish the Metro a happy birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
