Being a volunteer: bringing sunshine into people’s lives!

December 5th, International Volunteer Day, is the perfect opportunity to say THANK YOU to this incredible army of hearts who help brighten people’s lives every day. At Les Résidences Soleil, volunteering is lived year-round, every single day, and takes shape through countless projects and events!

Our Soleil Volunteers

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding and enriching activities, helping people stay active and engaged. At every Les Résidences Soleil, we are proud and grateful to count on the invaluable presence of many resident-volunteers who are often at the very heart of the action!

Together with the activity coordinator and residence management, our resident-volunteers collaborate with the Residents’ Committee to plan and organize a wide range of activities in our manors:

  • Setting up themed decorations to create a warm and festive atmosphere: summer outdoor décor, Halloween, Christmas, etc.
  • Preparing dance nights and special events.
  • Planning daily activities: recreation, games, physical activities, etc.
  • Organizing various outings.
  • Welcoming and supporting new residents during their first few weeks in their new home.
  • Accompanying residents to specific activities.
  • Developing partnerships with local organizations: daycares, artists, libraries, etc.
  • And much more!

Giving time as a gift: a small gesture that can change everything

Volunteering also means choosing to give your time to improve the quality of life for those around you, without necessarily being part of a committee or association.

We often think of “big commitments,” but it’s also the “small everyday gestures” that can make a big difference. The secret? When you help others, you’re also giving yourself an incredible gift!

Volunteering also comes to life through small daily gestures

Here are some simple ideas that don’t take much time but can make all the difference:

  • Doing the shopping for a neighbor who can’t leave their home.
  • Lending a listening ear to a friend so they can confide in you.
  • Holding the door open for the person behind you.
  • Accompanying a resident to a swimming activity so they aren’t alone.
  • Offering a ride to someone who has no transportation to get to an appointment.

5 ideas to make a difference in residences

In senior residences, every moment shared with others can have a profound impact, while giving you a rich human experience

  • Taking a walk with a resident so they can get some fresh air, move around, and chat in a peaceful setting.
  • Reading a book, newspaper, or letter aloud to someone with a visual impairment—or simply to share a relaxing moment together.
  • Helping a resident take part in activities (bingo, memory games, crafts, etc.).
  • Lending a hand at mealtimes, by walking a resident to the dining room or sharing a moment with them.
  • Providing a listening ear and regular presence by visiting someone who is isolated, ill, or lacks social support to bring a little warmth and humanity.

5 good reasons to volunteer

  • A breeze of joy and pride

Volunteering brings a great sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. Who doesn’t love feeling proud after having a real impact on someone else?

  • A shield for the brain

Did you know volunteering is considered a “serious leisure” that helps you stay young? According to the INSPQ, volunteering significantly contributes to seniors’ overall well-being—physically, mentally, and socially.

  • A heart in top shape

Volunteering is a key ingredient for healthy aging, helping people stay physically active and mentally alert for as long as possible.

  • Self-Empowerment

Volunteering also allows you to broaden your horizons, expand your social network, and acquire new skills. It’s a chance to assert your values, discover a new hobby, or even redirect your career.
